The GCRA Landscape

2017-10-24

Ever wonder who is in the GCRA?

The regular ringette season is now underway, so the players have been practicing and of course they're happy to be playing their first few games.  We're all getting to know the people on our teams, but do you know who else is out there in the GCRA?

This season there are 361 registered players, 89 registered coaches/assistant coaches and countless other volunteers.

We currently have 27 Teams/groups in the GCRA.

There are 3 groups of Bunnies: a Junior group in the east end, a Senior group in the east end, and a combined Junior/Senior group in the south end.  These are our rapidly developing stars who are learning to skate and handle a ringette stick.

There are 6 teams in the Novice division: 2 in each of the U8 level, U9 and U10 levels.  These teams are learning all the rules of Ringette, and are developing their skills, while playing games in the NCRRL (the National Capital area league).

There are 8 teams in the Regional division: 2 in each of the U12, U14, U16 and U19 levels.  These teams play ringette games in the NCRRL for fun without the intensity of a highly competitive environment.

There are 8 competitive teams: 2 in each of the U12, U14, U16 and U19 levels.  These teams play by the same rules as everyone else but they're focused on competing.  Their objective is qualifying to participate and hopefully win at the Ontario championships. The top Ontario teams can then go on to compete at the Eastern Canada or National championships.  Their provincial rankings are determined by their performance in tournament games.  The competitive teams play in the NCRRL, or LRQ/LERQ (the Quebec league), but these league games do not count towards their provincial rankings, so they are used more for development and training.

Finally, there are 2 Open teams that are partially associated with the GCRA.  These teams are playing at the adult level and are for players that age out of GCRA or for parents that get the itch to play after watching their kids.  The open level teams play in the GAARA (Gloucester and area adult association).  There are many moms that play in the developmental division of GAARA that have kids currently playing in GCRA.

Good luck to all these teams, and thanks to all the coaches and volunteers.
