U12 team formation strategy for 2021/22 season and beyond
2021-08-20New format for U12 team formation are now in place across the province. All families who have athletes entering the U12 division this fall should familiarize themselves with the new format. Read on if this applies to you!
Commencing this season, U12 will be categorized as A, B and C. There is no longer a classification for "U12 Provincial". All U12 teams will participate in Regional year end events, there are no longer Provincial events for the U12 divisions.
The core objective of the changes in this division is to ensure equal development opportunities for all athletes at a time in their ringette careers where many athletes see significant growth.
High level overview of team formation:
Ringette Ontario have published a Member Notice "Ringette Ontario U10/U12 Programming" that speaks more to how U12 teams are to formed and monitored throughout the season, read up here:

The core objective of the changes in this division is to ensure equal development opportunities for all athletes at a time in their ringette careers where many athletes see significant growth.
High level overview of team formation:
- All athletes in the U12 division will be provided an opportunity to have a minimum of 2 conditioning sessions prior to any sortouts.
- All athletes will be evaluated to determine at which level they are best suited to play in (A, B or C).
- Once GCRA has an appreciation for how many athletes belong in each level, we will balance all teams within each of the levels.
- The levels will be tiered (A,B,C) based on level play
- When there are 2 or more teams within a level, the teams will be balanced (no more "Red" and "Blue" or A1 and A2)
- Ideally, GCRA will have two balanced teams at each level, however we cannot commit to what levels or how many teams at each level that we will field until we have an opportunity to evaluate all players
- Throughout the season, all U12 teams will be provided with the same number of practices regardless of level. IE: U12A, B and C will all get equal ice opportunities
- Throughout the season, all U12 teams / athletes will be provided with equal opportunities to attend additional skill development sessions. What this looks like and how it will be rolled out is still under development.
